X chromosome inactivation centre
Site on X chromosome responsible for the inactivation of that X chromosome in female mammals (see Lyon hypothesis). Gene responsible, Xist, maps to this region and seems to code for a nuclear RNA that co-localizes with the inactivated X chromosome. Xist introduced on an autosome is capable of inactivation in cis and the Xist RNA becomes localized at that autosome.
